PROGRAMS

We aim to spark imagination and ideas about what journalism could and should be in an AI age. We build programs that put journalists face-to-face with what's changing — and give them the tools to do something about it.

CONVENE

We create spaces where journalists, technologists, and researchers work on hard problems together — not just hear about them.

Working summits

We partner on and facilitate workshops. In December 2025, we hosted the first Signals at Scale working summit at the Newmark J-School, and participated in two more of the summit events in Spring 2026. This working summit series brings together publishers, technologists, investors, journalists, historians, and researchers to think seriously about the architecture of the emerging information ecosystem. Over two days, participants build frameworks together around the deepest questions about what needs to be built, funded, and governed in the AI-mediated information ecosystem.

Salons

In April 2026, we kicked off the first of a series of salons — intimate, off-the-record gatherings where newsroom managers, technologists, funders, investors and thought leaders wrestle with specific questions at the intersection of AI and journalism. The conversations are designed for honest discussion and unexpected connections among leaders in and adjacent to journalism about the future of the public information.

Conferences and gatherings

We bring our perspective on the structural shifts in information flows, and what journalism can to do about it, to industry events. Recent appearances include NICAR, Gräv, Newsgeist, the J+ Unconference, and Story Discovery at Scale.

EDUCATE

We teach journalists to think critically about AI and make informed decisions about where it belongs in their work.

Workshops

Multi-day intensives where journalists design, build, and evaluate AI-powered tools — from understanding what AI can and can't do, to writing specifications and building working prototypes. Emphasis on responsible AI practices: how to audit what you build, design for transparency, and apply journalistic values. No coding experience required.

Trainings

Shorter sessions at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and beyond — Innovation Club, classroom collaborations, and guest trainings that bring AI concepts into journalism through hands-on experimentation.

INNOVATE

We experiment with new models for how journalism and AI work together — through partnerships that give newsrooms the capacity to try new things and explore what’s next.

Newsroom Partnerships

We work with newsrooms to explore how AI can serve real editorial needs and better help them better serve audiences. Interested in partnering with us or participating in a program? We work with newsrooms of all sizes. Get involved →

AI Innovation Internships

We’re launching AI Innovation Internships in Fall 2026, placing CUNY journalism students at partner newsrooms to work on AI-driven projects that enhance efficiency and capacity, from reporting to editing to operations. Trained in our AI News Innovation workshop and supported by a Tow-Knight Center technical adviser, students bring curiosity and fresh perspective; newsrooms get someone dedicated to exploring what's possible.
